Perry was the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Memorial Award for best pitcher in both the American League (in 1972 with the Cleveland Indians) and the National League (in 1978 with the San Diego Padres).  His notoriety grew during his 22-year-long career as a right-handed pitcher with his spitball pitch, which had been outlawed by Major League Baseball in the 1920s. In 1974, Perry penned his autobiography, “Me and the Spitter,” and eventually retired in 1983 after pitching for eight teams, starting with the San Francisco Giants in 1962 including the Cleveland Indians (1972-75) and ending with the Kansas City Royals in 1983. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
